Spay/Neuter Clinic
It is because of our volunteers that we are able to offer our low-cost, high-quality spay/neuter services to our community. Volunteers assist in the clinic by helping with registration on weekday mornings from 7-9AM. Each day from 10AM-4PM, volunteers support our staff by scrubbing surgical instruments, doing laundry, cleaning the general area, and helping with the check-out process of animals. These roles are crucial to the success of our Clinic and our TNR/ Community Cats programs. (More information is available here: Community Cats (ycspca.org))
Dog Walking
Volunteers are needed to walk all the dogs in our kennel every day. Walking provides the dog with the exercise, socialization, and outdoor time that they need to thrive. A dog walker's commitment to and impact on our animals’ well-being is invaluable. Dog walking is physically demanding work. Dog walkers must be able to walk several miles over varying terrain in all weather. Each dog walker is required to attend a four-class training session to partake in this volunteer opportunity.
Note: Volunteer dog walking hours take place every day from 10 am to 3 pm, including weekends.
Kennel Greeting
We love welcoming the public to our shelter to visit our adoptable animals. Kennel Greeters provide information about adoptable dogs and can help walk through our adoption process. They also work to make sure the public follows our safety policies while in the kennel, such as visitors keeping fingers away from cages and being mindful of dogs entering and exiting the kennel.
Canine Enrichment
It is our goal to provide our animals with a mentally stimulating environment throughout their stay with us. Help our Canine Enrichment program by filling Kongs, snuffle mats, and various other toys to enhance our dogs’ wellbeing.
Volunteering at Our Satellite Adoption Centers
The York County SPCA partners with two satellite adoption centers - PetSmart in West York and Petco in East York - to house and care for adoptable cats. Volunteers at these satellite adoption centers are trained to care for the animals as it pertains to feeding, cleaning, enrichment, and socialization.
Cat and Small Animal Cuddling
Can you think of a better way to spend your time than snuggling adorable shelter cats and other small animals? Through playtime and cuddles, our volunteers provide necessary socialization for our sweet fluffy friends that is instrumental in increasing their adoptability and helping them find their ‘furever’ homes.
